About SSES

The Shea for Sanitation and Environmental Sustainability (SSES) Programme addresses the interlinked challenges of poor sanitation, environmental degradation, and the loss of shea parklands in northern Ghana.

SSES is a flagship programme of EcoGrowth Development Initiatives Foundation (EGDIF) designed to integrate community-led sanitation systems, environmental restoration, and shea ecosystem conservation into a coordinated framework for sustainable development.

Community sanitation and environmental conservation activities under SSES programme

The programme is implemented through Community Youth Environmental Brigades (CYEBs), which bring together youth groups, women, traditional authorities, Environmental Health Units, schools, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to strengthen community-led environmental management systems.

Key interventions include monthly community clean-up campaigns, waste segregation and recycling systems, shea tree protection and tagging, annual tree planting initiatives, environmental education, and restoration of degraded landscapes across participating communities.

The pilot phase of the programme is being implemented in the Upper West Region over a three-year period in partnership with MMDAs, with the model designed for scale-up across other shea-producing regions of Northern Ghana.
