About UWHRP

The Upper West Heritage Renaissance Project (UWHRP) is a flagship cultural preservation and development project of EcoGrowth Development Initiatives Foundation (EGDIF), designed to preserve, revitalize, and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Upper West Region of Ghana as a foundation for education, tourism, youth empowerment, and sustainable economic development.

The project covers all eleven (11) districts of the Upper West Region and focuses on documenting indigenous knowledge systems, cultural practices, festivals, languages, arts, and historical landmarks while transforming them into drivers of community development and economic opportunity.

Upper West Heritage Renaissance Project cultural documentation, heritage preservation and community engagement activities

UWHRP responds to the gradual loss of indigenous heritage caused by modernization, urban migration, and limited documentation of oral traditions. The project provides a structured framework for safeguarding cultural identity while empowering communities to actively participate in heritage preservation.

Through cultural mapping, digital archiving, heritage education in schools, youth apprenticeship programmes, women-led cultural enterprises, and community-based tourism initiatives, the project strengthens intergenerational knowledge transfer and local economic development.

In partnership with traditional authorities, educational institutions, government agencies, and development partners, UWHRP positions culture as a catalyst for inclusive growth while promoting regional pride and national cultural identity.
